The centre was established to save the endangered Rothschild Giraffe and to be an educational institution.  Initially, two young giraffes were brought to the centre.  Each year the number of young giraffes that were brought into the centre increased.  As the young giraffes become adults, they are transferred to national parks. Some of these giraffes can now be found at Lake Nakuru National Park.
