Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage Nairobi

This is home to tiny new-born elephants, whose parents have been killed either by natural death, poachers or have been separated from their mothers for some other reason; Family is very important for elephant calf as it depends on its mother’s milk for the first two years of its life. The orphanage offers hope for an orphaned baby elephant fortunate enough to be found alive and so far, the orphanage is proud to have saved over 150 orphaned infant calves, which would otherwise have perished.

The baby elephants are raised at the orphanage with the intention of gradually reintegrating them into the wild. The age range of the elephants can vary from a few months to three years. Each elephant is assigned to its own keeper, who acts as a surrogate mother and will stay with the elephant until it is released back into the wild in Tsavo East National Park.
