Lake Manyara National Park is a superb example of what the rift valley has to offer, a scenic gem, with a setting extolled by Ernest Hemingway “as the loveliest I had ever seen in Africa”. Established in the 1960’s it covers 330square kilometers of which 1/3 of this area is the lake itself. Home to an incredible birdlife, famous tree climbing lions and its breathtaking scenery is a marvel within the Park.

Lake Manyara National Park Distance from Arusha
By Road: Located southwest of Arusha, Lake Manyara National Park is in a distance of 126 kilometers from Arusha and only takes 1 ½ to 2 hours to reach the entrance gate.

By Air: Charter and scheduled flights are also available from Arusha, Ngorongoro, and Serengeti which land at Manyara Airstrip on the escarpment 10 minutes’ drive from the park.

Lake Manyara National Park Weather and Climate
Lake Manyara is mild and temperate with an altitude range from 954 – 2055 meters; it is rarely hot but is always cold during the evening and morning. Lake Manyara National Park is usually warm and dry interrupted by two rainy seasons during the months of March to May and a shorter season in October and November.

Game-viewing is at its best between June and September, while bird-watchers will find the best conditions between November and June.

The diverse habitats surrounding the lake attract many species of mammals such as baboons, elephants, wildebeest, buffalo, hippopotamus, impala, bushbuck, waterbuck, zebra, giraffe, mongoose, warthog, leopards, and the famous tree-climbing lions.

Over 380 bird species have been noted at the park which includes the flamingoes; Africa fish eagle, francolins, whistling ducks, sacred ibis, spoonbill, cape teal, yellow-billed duck, little grebe, saddle-billed storks, marabou stork, cattle egret, goliath herons.

Other common birds at Lake Manyara include; crowned crane, plovers, pigeons, owls, cuckoo, woodpeckers, shrikes, sunbirds, weavers, lilac breasted rollers, doves, etc.
