Zambian currency is the (Kwacha –ZMK); the Bank notes are issued denominations of 50, 100, 500, 1,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, and 50,000 Kwacha. We highly recommend you travel with US Dollars, don’t exchange into the local currency to avoid getting confused as all tourist related destinations do accept US Dollars. US banknotes with the series date before the year 2006 will be declined in East Africa, Kindly make sure all your dollars bills that you bring along with you are post year 2006.

ATMs

ATMs are available within the big city which includes; Livingstone, Lusaka and other major towns in Zambia. Major Banks ATMs accept Visa cards but not MasterCard card.

Banks

Banks operating hours are from 08:15 to 15:30 hours Mondays through to Fridays and 08:15 to 11:30 hours on Saturdays.

Credit Cards

Most hotels, restaurants, travel agencies and the bigger shops will accept credit cards. Some banks will advance local currency against your credit card and Visa is more readily accepted than MasterCard or American Express.

Currency Exchange

You can exchange any foreign currency at any authorized banks and bureau de change. Just inquire from your guide or hotel reception for any assistance. However we do recommend you stick to your US dollars, they are universally accepted in all the destinations you will be visiting.

Local currency (Zambia Kwacha-ZMW) and foreign currencies: amounts exceeding USD 5000.- or equivalent must be declared.
