The Maasai, Datooga, and Hadza are the major communities who have been living around the crater though they cannot engage in farming but they can rear livestock. The name Ngorongoro is a name given by the native Maasi people meaning “the black hole”. The crater supports a vast number of animals such as elephants, café buffalos, hyenas, lions, jackals, zebras, wildebeest, and more than 550 bird species because of the freshwater it holds. There are no giraffes in the crater because of the steep descent. The major highlights of Ngorongoro Crater are, Lake Magadi which is home to several bird species, Hippo pool popular picnic site, Mandusi swamp popular with elephants, Lerai forest popular with baboons and the old stone burial mound believed to have been the burial place for the Datooga people. Later you will ascent back to the rim of the crater and proceed by road to Serengeti National Park driving through the Maasai people’s villages and their cattle grazing on the slopes of the Ngorongoro escarpment. The name “Serengeti” comes from the Maasai word Siringet which means the place where the land runs forever. The park was established in the 1920s but it was gazetted as a national park in 1951. Initially, it was a grazing land for the Maasai People and later they were relocated to Ngorongoro Highlands where they live as of now. Serengeti received global recognition in the 1950s after it was the subject of a major conservation film “Serengeti Shall Not Die” by Bernhard Grzmek and his son, Michael. The park covers an area of 5,700 sq miles, (14,763sq km), which means it’s larger than Connecticut State in the USA. In 1981, it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage and Biosphere Reserves site because of its biodiversity and ecological significance.  Serengeti plains are dotted with a number of granite and gneiss outcroppings known as Kopjes, which are large rocky formations as a result of volcanic activity and they act as shelter for several mammals and birds. The park is also famous for the annual Wildebeest migration, where several millions of herbivores including Wildebeest, zebras, Topis, and Gazelles from the south migrate to Masai Mara Game Reserve for the lush green grass and water from the Mara River. Several animals can be sported within the park such as Giraffes, Café buffalos, lions, cheetahs, gazelles, hyenas, topi, zebras, wildebeest, and impala among others, several birds species can be spotted as well.
